But information has been slow to emerge and communicati

ion with affected areas remains limited. On Monday, Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said that “everyth

ing indicates that we can have a record of more than 1,000 dead” — a figure that some experts now believe could be conservative.

The mortuary at the central hospital in Beira “is full and dozens of bodies need to be

removed and handled in a dignified way,” according to IFRC. Beira is still flooded, which makes it impossible to bury bodies, IFRC said.

It is premature to say how many people have died while affected areas remain i

naccessible, Stephen Fonseca, regional forensics manager at the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), told CNN.

On Friday morning ICRC set up a new base in Chimoio, near the border with Zimbabw

e. Fonseca said identifying victims is “a monumental task” that will take months or years rather than days or weeks.

”The agony of not knowing what happened to your loved one in a disaster like Cyclone Idai is

indescribable,” Diane Araujo, an ICRC delegate deployed to Beira, said in a statement Friday.

Modi and officials at the bank allegedly issued fraudulent Lette

Letters of Undertakings to overseas banks to obtain buyer’s credit, according to India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

“Investigation further revealed that the fraud was allegedly perpetrat

ed despite the knowledge of senior officials of Punjab National Bank, who did not impl

ement the circulars and caution notices issued by the Reserve Bank of India regarding safeguarding the SWIFT oper

ations and instead, misrepresented the factual situation to RBI,” according to a statement from the CBI last year.

The CBI has raided dozens of offices and seized property worth millions of dollars belonging to Modi, who denies all wrong

doing. He has already been charged by the bureau for criminal conspiracy, fraud and corruption.

Forbes once ranked Modi as India’s 85th richest man, with a net worth of $1.8 billion.

What they have done, specifically the iPad Air, is adopt tech

nology like the Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil, which used to be exclusive to the iPad Pro,” Stant

on said. “Now that iPad Pro has been redesigned with slim bezels and rounded-edges, its previous exclu

sive features can trickle down to cheaper price points. This is especially savvy of Apple because it stands to bene

fit from greater revenue from accessories as products like Smart Keyboard and Apple Pencil become more accessible.”

Apple was widely expected to tease the iPads ahead of its spring event on March 25, indicati

ng the company is more open to unveiling non-critical hardware updates without so much spectacle.

”Apple wants to get the iPad out of the way so it can hold its first event truly focused on streaming,” Lauren Guenveur, senior research analyst at IDC told

CNN Business. “If Apple announced new Pads, it would turn into a hardware event, and that’s not what it wants.”

Tablet shipments have declined in the past few years, especially among devices that don’t come with a keyboard. “Per

haps what’s the point for having an event for a declining category?” Guenveur added.

All the votes — from the country’s 29 states and seven

union territories — will be counted on May 23, the commission said at a press conference in New Delhi.

Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ar

e seeking re-election after a landslide victory in 2014, winning 282 seats — the largest majo

rity by a single party in 30 years. The election is coming off the back of escalating tensions between India and Pak

istan over the disputed Kashmir region that almost brought the two nuclear armed neighbors to the brink of war.

India took a hard line with Pakistan during the crisis, accusing

the country of not doing enough to stop terrorists active within its borders. While terrorist group Jaish-e-M

ohammed (JeM) claimed responsibility for a deadly bombing in the Pulwama district of Kashmir, which pre

cipitated the crisis, New Delhi also said Pakistan had a “direct hand” in the attack. Islamabad denied the claim.

India also said it had launched airstrikes on what it alleged was a terrorist training camp across the Line of Con

trol, the de facto border between India and Pakistan in the disputed Kashmir region.

Draft law on foreign firms to ensure fair competition

With the ongoing second session of the 13th National People’s Congress reviewing the draft law on foreign investmen

t over the weekend-the third review in three months-the draft is highly likely to sail through legislative scrutiny and

be signed into law after being submitted to the top legislature for review on Friday.

Once approved, which seems most likely because most of the controversia

l issues have been addressed, the draft foreign investment law will become what many belie

ve to be the most important legislation in China since it entered the World Trade Organization in 2001. It will rep

lace the three existing laws regulating foreign-invested entities now-the Chinese-foreign equity joint ventures law

, Chinese-foreign cooperative joint ventures law, and wholly foreign-owned enterprises law.

More importantly, the draft law represents the “fundamental change” in the country’s approach to foreign invest

ment administration, which will greatly increase “openness, transparency and predictability”.

But despite the fact that the draft law is, first and forem

ost, part of the measures to deepen reform and opening-up in order to improve China’s overall business environment, some assume Beijing is rushing t

he draft through the NPC to help trade negotiations with Washington. Such assumptions are groundless, to say the le

ast, because discussions on adjusting the existing regulatory statutes had begun around 2013. Plus, a 170-arti

cle draft foreign investment law was published for public review way back in January 2015.

Moreoverarticle draft in 2018 is nothing short

of revolutionary, as it is aimed at a strategic turn in the country’s approach to foreign inv

estment. Beijing’s concept of openness is no longer limited to offering favorable treatments to businesses, including for

eign businesses. It focuses more on providing an environment conducive to rules-based fair competition.

The report came as China is conducting G trial operati

ns in a string of cities, enabling large-scale pre-commercial use this year. Next-generation wireless technology is expecte

d to be at least 10 times faster than 4G and will support superfast movie downloads, the streaming of virtual reality games and self-driving cars.

Yang Yuanqing, a deputy to the 13th National People’s Congress and chairman of Lenovo Group Ltd, said 5G will play a dir

ect role in fueling the development of China’s digital economy and it will ignite a creativity boom among all industries.

“Traditional sectors need to pounce at the opportunities brought by 5G to upgra

de themselves and create more dividend by significantly boosting efficiency,” Yang said.

According to the article by CAICT, as 5G becomes increasingly intertwined with artifi

cial intelligence, big data and other cutting-edge technologies, it can be widely used to overhaul the way enter

prises operate research and development centers and reshape the manufacturing and management process.

Abrupt end to Trump-Kim summit prompts sighs of relief

The news that President Donald Trump walked away from negotiations with Nor

th Korea early and empty-handed led many experts and lawmakers to heave sig

hs of relief, even as the summit’s abrupt finale raises questions about where things go from here.

Many had worried that the President, eager to score a success and distract from damaging

testimony by his former personal lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, would make a deal that endangered Am

erica’s national security and possibly decrease the chances of Pyonyang denuclearization.

According to people familiar with conversations among the President’s senior national security officials, Trump told so

me advisers ahead of the Hanoi talks that he did not want to appear overly thirsty to secure a deal, hoping to pro

ve wrong the myriad analysts who predicted he’d give away the store to demonstrate some type of progress.

A fascination with Beijing that started over thirty years ago

In 1987, China was the final stage of a lengthy rail journey from Scot

land that would terminate in Hong Kong. Approaching the border from Mongolia, I was fee

ling tired after the travelling and was indeed starting to look forward in some ways to arriving in Hong Kong and head

ing back home. China would be my third country to discover and as we headed eventually south towards Beijing I re

alized how little I knew about the country. It did not feature widely within our educational system and unlike today very

little was mentioned in everyday news. It was only eight years after the policies of ‘Reform and Opening Up’ had be

en introduced but the country had not then developed into a modern economy. Most changes would happen over the fo

llowing years. What would it be like, I wondered, what would I discover during my relatively short stay?

Certainly as we approached the Capital I was looking out on scenes so different to my homelan

d. Technology appeared mostly intermediate and there were few cars on otherwise quiet tree-lined cou

ntry roads. Beijing Railway Station was an introduction to China’s population size for so many people em

erged from that train making their way out through the exit passages into the vast station square.
